Dr. Nahum Sonenberg  has been named
the 2009 Health Researcher of the Year
in Biomedical and Clinical Research by
the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR).

The GCRC is proud to congratulate Dr. Sonenberg for winning this prestigious award for his pioneering study and analysis of translation control mechanisms, the process by which the genetic information stored in our DNA is turned into proteins. His research has opened the door to new treatments for diseases such as cancer and HIV/AIDS.

DR. PHILLIPE GROS IS NAMED PERSONALITY OF THE WEEK BY LA PRESS AND RADIO-CANADA

(Announcement) For a few years now, progress in the field of genetics has been spectacular. There remain however, numerous unexplored paths that fascinate researchers, including Philippe Gros. His discoveries earned him the 2008 Prix Wilder-Penfield, awarded by the Quebec government. A few months ago he also won the prestigious Killam Prize in the Health Sciences category, which included a $100,000 grant. Philippe Gros is one of the principal investigators at McGill University’s Life Sciences Complex, newly opened last year. He leads the Complex Traits Group. He and his team are exploring the interaction between environmental factors and genes that predispose to disease. He is also a tenured professor in the Department of Biochemistry at the same university. To underline the remarkable contributions of Philippe Gros towards the understanding of human health, La Presse and Radio-Canada have named him personality of the week. Radio Canada Link

Inaugural Joint Conference
September 10-13, 2006

research2The inaugural conference entitled The McGill Cancer Centre and the Weizmann Institute of Science 1st Annual Conference on “Molecular Mechanisms of Tumorigenesis” was held on September 10-13, 2006 and took place at the McGill University Faculty Club in Montreal. The meeting brought together top scientists from both institutions.

Many governmental, university and industry officials  supported and joined the scientists  at the opening dinner ceremony. Thanks to our sponsors and contributors, the dynamics and the high caliber of the program The conference drew more that 150 attendees.

This conference gave the GCRC the opportunity to share the novel research brought by the team from the Weizmann with the Montreal community. Indeed, on the second evening of the conference, the scientists addressed the public with pertinent issues regarding different areas of the cancer disease. This public event was attended by close to 200 people.

April 2006: Dr. Nahum Sonenberg elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences
